Shame indeed

Two things bring shame on a home. One is dressing pets up in costumes. It's simply inexcusable. Look how sad this dog is. Cody goes limp when you put a hat on him. Why? He doesn't want our neighbor dogs to see. And they shouldn't have to. It's just wrong.

The other great shame is a blog that goes over a month without an update. But it is a shared shame. We started this blog to keep people up to date on the progress of our adoption. The problem is: no progress, no update. Yes, the big wait is just that. And it just got longer. Today's Bethany update said the wait from log in date (LID) to referral is now 14-15 months. The travel date to China after referral is received is averaging at 7-10 weeks. So for the last three months, people have asked when we anticipate seeing progress in our adoption. Amy and I have been saying "about a year" for three months, and we will likely repeat that answer until we see any evidence of the wheels turning across the Pacific.

Anyway, we are reading and learning a lot and will likely begin posting some things we are hearing in trainings. We realize our adoption process, like our daughter, isn't just ours - it belongs to our whole family and to our community. So maybe we can give everyone a heads up about some of the issues we are likely to face as a cross cultural family. Or maybe we can pass on what we are reading about creating a Gospel-centered home. Anyway, we will set shame aside and press on. We are encouraged as we see the Lord filling our days with blessings and responsibilities. Keep praying for Salem and for all her parents. Check back in a month. Maybe we'll squeeze out another post or two!

I love the pictures. I hope you keep including them. They add to the flavor of your blog.

I hope that you will share your thoughts on how you intend to bring Salem into your family. I am interested to hear particulars of what you learn and decide. For instance, what would you do if a certain friend decided to get a salad bowl at Zaxby's and pretend it is a chinaman hat. And what if that same person persisted in using "chinaman" as an adverb?

God bless your home.

Glad you like the pics, Rockin' I. We'll talk about how to share about how we'll bring Salem "into our family." It's funny - we don't discuss it much because we really view her as already in our family. But we'll think through the process we've been through. I'd love to hear more specific questions from you or anyone. Maybe I'll post a "call for questions" sometime.

I'm sorry the wait is turning out to be longer.

I'm also sorry for that dog.

Funny, but I would have thought you would have been among the heathen who would dress their pets in clothes. Come to think of it, haven't I seen Cody in a red bandana before?

No way, man! (although I wouldn't likely make a big deal about a bandana. Especially on a border collie.) Once (for a lark) I put a hat or something on Cody at Petsmart. It was hilarious. He slid around the store on his belly in utter shame. He knew I was laughing at him.

Hey,
I stumbled over here via the Andrew Peterson website...
Prayers coming your way for your family and for Salem.
Hopefully things speed up soon.
We just had our last post-placement study with our Bethany social worker for our son who's been home from Guatemala for 6 months, and she told us about the delays that have been coming up with the China program. Hang in there.
